A homeowner from Birch Cliff, near Kingston Road, contacted us about a broken front door lock in an older detached house. The original mortise lock had been working for years, but the interior handle suddenly stopped returning to its normal position. The latch began sticking inside the door, making it difficult to close and secure the entrance.

Our locksmith removed the lock case from the wooden door and inspected the internal mechanism. We found a worn latch-return spring and a binding linkage inside the mortise lock. The handle was still connected to the spindle, but the damaged spring could no longer return the mechanism reliably. The homeowner had assumed the entire lock would need replacing, especially since the original hardware was several decades old.

We inspected the spindle, latch assembly, spring seating and internal moving parts for additional wear. After confirming that the main lock body and cylinder were still serviceable, our technician replaced the faulty spring with a compatible component, cleaned the mechanism and applied suitable lock lubricant to the moving contact points. The original lock case was then reassembled and refitted into the door.

Before finishing, we tested the handle return, latch movement and key operation with the door both open and closed. We also checked that the latch engaged the strike plate without forcing the handle.

The repair took approximately 55 minutes and cost $185 CAD + HST. The homeowner kept the original lock, existing keys and door hardware. No new cylinder or complete lock replacement was required.

What made this job worthwhile was identifying a small internal failure before it turned into a much more expensive hardware replacement.
